our story

Once upon a time in edgemont village…

In 1987, Philip and Linda Mitchell - with the help of their four niños - opened what became Vancouver’s most-awarded Mexican restaurant: Cafe Norte. Situated in North Vancouver’s Edgemont Village, Cafe Norte became an icon of the community developing a loyal following over its 11 year life.

By 1998 Cafe Norte and the Mitchell Family had faced a series of unfortunate events and the restaurant was forced to close its doors. When this news was made public, Edgemont Village banded together and raised over $250k to save the restaurant through “pre-payment” for food. This type of crowd funding, while common place today, was almost unheard of back then. It was an incredible display of community support but, despite a long hard battle to stay open, the restaurant was unable to be saved.

We’ll be honest, a lot of tequila was drank that year.

Now, over two decades later, Jeremy and Katie Mitchell, Philip and Linda’s oldest children, have come together to bring a contemporary version of Cafe Norte back to Edgemont Village: Cantina Norte. Opening in early 2021, Cantina Norte will bring back many of the beloved flavours from Cafe Norte in the newly built Connaught development only 100m from the original restaurant location.

So, Edgemont Village, come be a part of the new chapter of our story - we’re looking forward to making more memories with you at Cantina Norte.
